Kat Moraros '10 models the winning Trashion Show 2009 creation, a dress made of tea-bag packets by Margaret Koerber '10.
Strutting down a vibrantly illuminated runway to blaring music played by student DJs, Kathryn Moraros '10 modeled the winning creation: a 1950s-style cocktail dress layered with nonrecyclable tea bag packets.
Other ensembles gracing the Gray Cage runway on a mild November evening were fashioned from unused tents, discarded printer paper, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans and duct tape.
This was the fourth annual Trashion Show, held Nov. 18 following the Harvest Meal. Surrounded by desserts, the Bates community gathered to witness the year's most stylish "green" event, a fashion show that raises awareness of the trash we produce and the recycling initiatives aimed at minimizing it. Eager shoppers filled Underhill Arena for the ninth edition of Bates' popular Clean Sweep.
Bates' ninth annual Clean Sweep, a "garage sale" of usable goods donated by departing students, raised a record $21,400 in proceeds that will be divided among local nonprofit organizations. (more...)

Among the attractions at the forthcoming Bates' Homecoming Weekend is "Faces of Bates Across the Decades," a panel discussion exploring and celebrating experiences of the college's international alumni and alumni of color.

Bates College debaters started their season in style the weekend of Sept. 25-27 with a tournament win in Vermont and a strong showing at Boston University.
Representing Bates' Brooks Quimby Debate Council, sophomores Colin Etnire of San Francisco and Ian Mahmud of Duxbury, Mass., finished first out of 76 teams in the Robert Huber Memorial Debating Championship at the University of Vermont on Sept. 27. (Debate teams comprise two people.)

Bates physicist Nathan Lundblad
Assistant Professor of Physics Nathan Lundblad is the first member of the Bates College faculty to receive a Defense Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR) grant from the U.S. Department of Defense.
Sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the grant is for $388,088 over three years. It will fund Lundblad's research into atomic activity at ultralow temperatures. Bates is the only liberal arts school in the nation and the only academic institution in Maine to receive a DEPSCoR grant this year. (more...)
