'Shakespeare's new play' to be performed at Bates College

Bates College presents John Reed's All the World's a Grave, a new play weaving together some of Shakespeare's most compelling characters and language, in performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday, Nov. 12-13 and 15-16, and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in Schaeffer Theatre, 305 College St.

Professor of Theater Paul Kuritz directs this theater department production. Admission is $6 general admission and $3 for senior citizens and non-Bates students. For more information, please visit www.batestickets.com or call 207-786-6161.

Renowned South African choreographer opens debut U.S. tour at Bates

In its first-ever concert held during the academic year, the internationally acclaimed Bates Dance Festival collaborates with the Bates College Concerts Committee to present "Beautiful Me" by the renowned South African company Vuyani Dance Theatre Project at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in Bates College's Schaeffer Theatre, 305 College St.

The performance kicks off the troupe's North American tour. Tickets, at $20 for the general public and $12 for students and seniors, can be purchased on line at: www.batesdancefestival.org. Pianist Duncan Cumming '93 returns to his alma mater with violinist Hilary Cumming, his wife, to perform works of Schubert, Brahms and Dvorák at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St.

On a brisk autumn night in 1998, 85-year-old Angie Genova grabbed her bowling bag and purse and set out on foot for her bowling league. Though the bowling alley was a half-mile from her home in suburban Waltham, Mass., the mother of nine and grandmother of more than 20 had little trouble navigating the way.

When Angie arrived at the Wal-Lex Recreation Center, she tried the doors and found they were locked. So she waited. And waited. And after a while, the tiny white-haired woman walked home and called her family to ask where everyone was.

It was 4 a.m. That's when her family knew for sure: Angie had Alzheimer's disease. (more...)

Sociology professor Heidi Chirayath wondered what she was doing at an early meeting of a campus group formed to advance the arts at Bates.

Bates Dance Festival, Lakeside Concerts offer season finales

Réveillons! closes the 2009 Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series.

The Bates Dance Festival and the Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series end their seasons in high style this weekend, starting Thursday, Aug. 6, with the first of two "Different Voices" dance festival performances and a concert by Réveillons!, a Québécois folk band.

"Different Voices," a diverse program of new works by international and emerging choreographers, takes place at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 6 and 7, in Schaeffer Theatre, 305 College St. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $12 for students and seniors, and can be purchased by calling 207-786-6161.

Réveillons!, known for its modern take on traditional French-Canadian music, closes the 2009 Bates College Midsummer Lakeside Concert Series at 6 p.m. Aug. 6 in the Florence Keigwin Amphitheater at the college's Lake Andrews.

Sponsored by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates and the Bingham Betterment Fund, Lakeside concerts are open to the public at no cost. Picnics are encouraged, as is bringing lawn chairs or blankets. For more information, please call 207-786-6400. (more...)
